Evril is the third installment in the release scheme of four EPs that Kosei Fukuda recorded as self-standing chapters of his debut techno narrative. To the extent the monochromatic images of the sleeves illustrate the main musical moods contained on each vinyl, the shell pictured here stands as the perfect icon. The opening eponymous track immediately plunges the listener into the spiral of mid-tempo techno. It evokes a mildly hallucinatory trip within a contained yet neverending winding corridor of thick rhythm. This tempo and the accompanying atmosphere are maintained on B1 track “Roam (with image)”, as its somewhat claustrophobic sonic design gets ever more hypnotic. The faster pace on the following “Rag” rushes the music even deeper along the curve line of the techno shell. Acidic synths floating around the muffled beat convey a clear signal – make no mistake, you’re on a downward spiral of underground club music, one that is perhaps best experienced as exploration of subconscious ‘depth’ rather than any lucid ‘surface’. Indeed, the fourth and last release will crystallize this approach. For now, the exploratory but well stream-lined techno dominates the record and demands no musical resolution, inviting instead to flip it over and anticipate the final destination. And if that were not enough, the vinyl comes with the download code for a hidden track “Sky Clair” which ticks according to the fast-paced clock of “Rag” but is based on the melancholic repetition of a piano melody whose clarity transports the listener to yet another sphere of Kosei’s musical landscape.
