Dark night of the soul is the debut release of young Japanese producer Kosei Fukuda and the first EP in the four-installments sequence of records that will be appearing in the course of 2018. But while this is an auspicious harbinger of a techno narrative stretched over four vinyl, the present record can be fully appreciated on its own. Born and raised in Tokyo but educated in Europe and now based in Berlin, Kosei treats his releases as a Gesamtkunswerk – a holistic work of art that connects the dots of sound, word and vision in a definitive fashion. Mastered at Dubplates and Mastering, the sound is firmly grounded in crisp yet remarkably warm techno convention, opening dreamy spaces, especially in the nostalgically sublime Pairon that opens side B. If the sonic and rhythmic layers of all three tracks satisfy the ear and the body in equal measure, then it is the melodically induced dark and melancholic moods that connect the first carnal responses to the mental reflection that this music inevitably inspires. The words which make up the titles, names and vocal samples gently guide possible interpretations. For one thing, implied here is an interplay of menace and the notion of zero point conveyed by the Japanese name of Kosei’s own imprint Reiten on which the record appears. The idea of oscillation between darkness of soul and a fixed point of reference that feeling can provide comes to mind. Such an approach is reinforced by the cover photograph of Valentina Berthelon known for her audio-visual collaborations with Tobias. Black and white liquid image of human heart connotes steady yet finite beat pattern filled with whatever our experience and imagination allows. A perfect evocation of emotional minimal technoscapes that at once work as complete pieces and yield themselves to big room club sets.
